Self Care Is . . .

What is self-care to you?

What are the first words that came to your mind when you think of self-care?

Did you connect self-care with being selfish, or self-absorbed?

It would be easy to say ‘yes, it’s selfish’, when you get lost in a sea of tasks and chores every day.

Hi, I’m Kellee Waters,

I am here to tell you that self-care is not selfish!

In fact, it is the complete opposite.

I have been there, expecting myself to produce and perform to the best of my ability, even if it meant putting myself on the back burner, until I’ve almost become burned out.

You cannot pour from an empty cup.

You must fill your cup first.

When you board a flight, the first thing the crew does is give a safety demonstration.

If there is an emergency situation, you have to put your oxygen mask on first, before you can do anything for anyone else.

If you are a parent travelling with a child, the crew will insist you think of yourself first!

As a result, you will be able to fasten your child’s oxygen mask.

Skipping this vital step may mean that you could pass out, due to lack of oxygen, and then there’s no way you can assist anyone else.

It might seem counterintuitive to put yourself first in a dangerous situation, but this is a good example of how imperative self-care can be, for those who depend on you.

Self-care is a tool that must be used to regularly allow you to refuel, reset, and get on with your day.

A car must have fuel in the tank before it can be driven.

I am a vessel.

To self-care is to be self-aware.
